بينما يقع القسم الرئيسي لفرنسا في أوروبا الغربية، فرنسا تتشكل أيضاً من الأراضي فيأمريكا الشمالية، الكاريبي، أمريكا الجنوبية، المحيط الهندي الغربي والجنوبي، شمال وجنوب المحيط الهادي، والقارة القطبية الجنوبية (لم يعترف بها أكثر البلدان).

تمتلك فرنسا تشكيلة كبيرة من المناظر الطبيعية، تتراوح بين السهول الساحلية في الشمال والغرب والتي تشكل ثلثا المساحة الكلية لفرنسا^[5]، حيث تجاور فرنسا بحر الشمال و المحيط الأطلسي، إلى الجبال في المنطقة الجنوبية الغربية والألب في المنطقة الجنوبية الشرقية. في الوسط مناطق مرتفعة صخرية ومشجرة بكثافة، بالإضافة إلى حوض النهر الشامل. فالجبال الرئيسية هي الألب، وأعلى قمة فيها هي المون بلان التي تعد أعلى قمة جبلية في أوروبا الغربية 4808 متر، والبيرينيه، والجورا، وليه أردان، ولوماسيف سنترال، والفوج.

بسبب أقسامها ما وراء البحار العديدة وأراضيها المتناثرة في كل محيطات الكوكب، تمتلك فرنسا ثاني أكبر المناطق الاقتصادية الخاصة (EEZ) في العالم، حيث تغطي 11.035.000 كم²، فقط وراء المنطقة الاقتصادية الخاصة بالولايات المتحدة (11.351.000 كيلومتر مربع)، وقبل المنطقة الاقتصادية الخاصة بأستراليا (8.232.000 كيلومتر مربع). تغطي المنطقة الاقتصادية الخاصة بفرنسا حوالي 8% من السطح الكلي لكل المناطق الاقتصادية الخاصة للعالم، بينما مساحة منطقة الجمهورية الفرنسية فقط 0.45% من مساحة الأرض الكلية للأرض.
